Why "Snake Doctor"?

Why "Snake Doctor"?

A Southern colloquial name for dragonflies, the term arose from the folk belief that a dragonfly's traditional darting flight pattern with lowered tail represented the stitching of a sewing needle. In some parts of the country there is a belief that dragonflies follow snakes, sewing them back together when injured.

I picked the name to represent the mixture of common beliefs and modern science, and to pay homage to my background.

It also is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the Snake Oil Salespeople who peddle placebos or harmful substances with great claims of curing all manners of illness without evidence. The job of the Family Practice Doc or other PCP is to wade through this misinformation and to teach the differences between evidence-based medicine and quackery.
